Well, it had to happen sooner or later. I was going to be consistently keeping the Galaxie all FERD parts, but as it turns out, a ‘68ish GM replacement e-brake handle will be perfectly suitable...
Like fuck am I paying $100-$400 for a complete e-brake mechanism when I can get a brand-new handle for <$20 that will work. Correct handle.
That’ll cost you when you take the car to a Concours D’Elegance
I’ll already be getting dinged for the modern-length (and chromed) dipstick instead of the screwy extra-long early windsor one, and my plug wires are non-Motorcrack, so YOLO And so the slippery slope to an LS-swapped Galaxie begins... This is how it starts. Before long you’ll be contemplating how nice an SBC would be.
I dunno, mang, I really like the way the 289 revs. An LS isn’t quite enough of an alluring bad idea to want to give that up.
Lies. Hideous lies. Buick 401 or GTFAC.
You’re already exploring the cheap and easy GM solutions. Mmm, torquey. There are plenty of bad ideas from Ford that you won’t have to do an LS-swap if you ever decide the 289 just doesn’t have enough oomph for that car.
Well, I mean, I know Cadillac bellhousings exist for a version of the Cruise-O-Matic, so getting a Cadillac 365 would just be common sense, right?
I could always wait until I actually have All The Money and buy a 427, 15" wheels, and 300 caps and pretend it was some kind of unholy abomination R-code
sedan.
Or, for other FoMoCo bad ideas, there are still high-compression MELs around, up to nearly 500 cubes when overbored.
I had the pleasure of listening to this car idle for a while at a Mecum auction last fall - it’s a G-code, not R-code, but goddamn that thing sounded good! The R-code would be sweet, but would cost all the dollars. While spending All The Dollars, one could always commit year blasphemy and set it up with a SOHC.
There was somebody in this area on Craigslist selling a six-pack 406 ‘62 a while back, and that thing was the sex. A tad overpriced at nearly 40 grand (IIRC), but so very sweet.
Well it won’t be numbers matching anyways, so why not go full out and go with the SOHC? Was the car blue? If so, it’s probably the same one - good luck finding a muscle car auction in the last 18 months that the car pictured was *NOT* at. Not sure why - greedy owner maybe. Oh and that blue one was RNM at $40k in the auction I was at. On the topic of R-code Galaxies: https://peterwindsor.com/2013/08/05/a-galaxie-win-for-clark/
I’ve seen a picture from that race that doesn’t show up in the article, and it’s a picture from behind of one of the Galaxies looking ready to devour a Cortina whole.
I recall the one I saw listed as either being blue or black. Might have been black. Either way, not a common bird, but not unheard of either.
Yeah, I just note it because that blue one has been making the rounds quite a bit the last year or two. I love stories and photos of those old race cars - took a hell of a lot of guts to wring out a car like that at high speeds, wearing a lap belt, in a car with no real crash protection.
